To get our answer of the question the first thing we need to know is what is the meaning of philosophy in literary terms. So let’s look at it.
According to Florida State University Department of Philosophy, the term “philosophy” means, “love of wisdom.”
Also according to Wikipedia, Philosophy is the systematized study of general and fundamental questions, such as those about existence, reason, knowledge, values, mind, and language.
In simple terms, philosophy is that branch which deals with knowledge and learning.
philosophers on growth
Various philosophers said many good things about growth. I am quoting here five famous philosophers and their sayings.
If I am walking with two other men, each of them will serve as my teacher. I will pick out the good points of the one and imitate them, and the bad points of the other and correct them in myself.
Employ your time in improving yourself by other men’s writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for.
I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing.
Those who educate children well are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those the art of living well.
The greatest human quest is to know what one must do in order to become a human being.
You may be wondering why I am writing down their quotes here. In these sayings you will find one thing in common i.e learning. In all the sayings listed above, all the five philosophers are giving important emphasize on learning and education.
They all know that how important is learning for the growth of a person.
Now if we look at the definition of growth mindset given by Carol Dweck it is also giving important emphasize on learning.
Therefore, we can say that both the concepts(given by philosophers and Carol Dweck) are almost parallel in comparison.
Hence, from this conclusion I can say that Yes, growth mindset is a philosophy. In fact many academic institutions are using as their guiding principle for the growth of their students.
