Do you want to know Is growth mindset a strength or weakness than you have come to the right place.

In this post I will explain the concept of strength and try to crackdown whether growth mindset is also a strength or not?

In the following paragraphs I have explained the concept using definition of strength, growth mindset ,and elements of strength.

If you don’t have time and want a quick answer to the question than Yes, growth mindset is a strength. To know its why part keep reading.

what is strength in psychology?

To define strength I am using the definition given by Linley. This definition will help you to understand its meaning better.

According to Linley, personal strengths are defined as our built-in capacities for particular ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving.

He goes on to say that “We know from two decades of positive psychology and strengths research that when people know what their strengths are and use those strengths, then good things happen.”

If I have to break it in more simple words than I would say that personal strengths are those capacities that we build over time by thinking, feeling, and acting in a positive way.

What are the 24 character strengths?

Peterson and Seligman explored the idea of personal strengths and gave a new name to it. They referred to them as Character strengths.

They divided them into six classes: wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence. There are various elements in six of them. There names are given below.

1. Wisdom

  1. Creativity
  2. Curiosity
  3. Love of learning
  4. Open-mindedness
  5. Perspective

2. Courage

  1. Authenticity
  2. Bravery
  3. Persistence
  4. Zest

3. Humanity

  1. Kindness
  2. Love
  3. Social intelligence

4. Justice

  1. Fairness
  2. Leadership
  3. Teamwork

5. Temperance

  1. Forgiveness
  2. Modesty/Humility
  3. Prudence
  4. Self-regulation

6. Transcendence

  1. Appreciation of beauty and excellence
  2. Gratitude
  3. Hope
  4. Humor
  5. Religiousness/Spirituality

Now you might be wondering what is the point of sharing these 24 character strengths here? Don’t worry you will get to know soon.

To make my point I am going to use the definition of growth mindset given by Carol Dweck.

Carol Dweck says “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point.”

In this definition there are three important words which you should pay attention to. These words are believe, dedication, and hard work.

If we go back to the 24 character strengths then you will find them in the list(name may vary). Also by general convention we know that self-belief, persistence and hard work are strengths a person possess.

Now if a person is using these strengths to grow his/her mindset and all these are essential tools to grow a mindset, Therefore can’t we say that growth mindset itself is a strength which is pushing a person to work hard for his/her goals.

I assume you are now in a position to connect the dots. These elements can be considered sub set of growth mindset.

Hence, from all these statements I come to the conclusion that Yes, growth mindset is a strength.
